Tips For Playing Omaha Poker - Learn and Memorize These Hand Rankings
If you want to play limit Omaha poker, you need to know how to play any starting hand. Obviously, some are stronger than others are, so you need to understand the rankings. In this game, you are dealt with many cards. You will need pairs if you want to come out as a winner. The majority of the highest ranks in limit Omaha consist of pairs.
The top rankings are:
1) AAKK
2) AAJT (double suited)
3) AAQQ
4) AAJJ
5) AATT
6) AA99
7) AAxx
8) JT98
9) KKQQ
10) KKJJ
As you can see, high pairs have a lot of value. The reason why AAJT is higher than AAQQ is that having AAJT increases your chance of forming a straight. You need to learn the percentages of rankings as well. For instance, starting out with the best hand, AAKK only gives you a 6% edge of winning against AAJT.
This means, obviously, that you need to be careful, even if you do have the best starting hand. The equity distribution spread in Omaha entails that no player really has much of an edge over his or her opponents, unlike in Texas Hold 'em. Why? Because Omaha players can potentially draw better cards that will help their hands more, giving them all a chance to improve their hands more so than in Texas Hold 'em.
It is possible to get a decent edge in Omaha, although there is always the possibility that the leading player will experience "extreme swings." So, what does this have to do with the pot limit? Well, success at this game includes selecting a starting hand very carefully, making a value bet, and minimizing losses.
As for the hands, you simply cannot play aggressively. If you start out with the best hand, you cannot afford to lose it. Some players do not believe in raising during pre-flop considering that any edge they might have is only a small one. However, if you think you can get away with raising a bit when you have the chance to do so, then go for it. Only do it when you think you have the highest hand, though. If the pot limit has not been reached, try coaxing your opponents into it slowly.
It is not possible to play Omaha without any risks and variance. Instead of fighting against the odds, you need to make them work for you. If you are pretty new to the game, only try playing the highest hands for the time being. Only play one of the aforementioned hands, and wait until you have more experience before you try playing weaker hands.
This is also a game in which you do not want to overestimate low pairs. A pair of fours or fives is only useful if they flop a set, and even then, they are not all that strong. As a beginner, you should stick with the high pairs. Later on, you can try playing middle pairs such as eights and nines. Also, keep in mind that having just one face card or ace is not good enough. In this game, you need a high pair or a set. As for bluffing, it is okay to try every now and then, but do not be predictable with it. Bluffing should only be used as a way to vary your playing. You should have a different strategy for every game.
